Murphy's citizenship.

Murphy and I are taking the Canine Good Citizen test on Saturday.

Here are the 10 test items:

Accepting a friendly stranger - easy! Murphy loves friendly strangers!
Appearance and grooming - easy! Murphy is pretty and more or less oblivious to being messed with.
Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) - Doable, especially now that an Easy Walk Harness is allowed.
Walking through a crowd - Fine, Murphy can handle crowds.
Sit and down on command and Staying in place - Easy, unless he does his rare but maddeningly stubborn "I randomly do not feel like sitting right now" routine, in which case I will have to touch him - gently - which is allowed.
Coming when called - Easy in the test conditions.
Reaction to another dog - Easy, what other dog?
Reaction to distraction - Easy, he probably won't notice at all.
Supervised separation - Easy, he probably wouldn't notice if I never came back, as long as his stranger was friendly.

Sitting politely for petting.

Uh oh.

Does that say SITTING? POLITELY? While receiving attention? But how could one possibly remain seated while wagging their tail so hard their butt is swinging violently in a 180 degree arc? How could one remain calm while a PERSON is giving them ATTENTION!

Yeah, I'm worried about that one.

So Murphy is going to the groomer tomorrow. Hopefully we can sway the evaluator with his incredible cuteness. And if he fails, at least he will smell good doing it.

Sitting politely must involve use of the tail, right? How could they help but take that into account. Besides, they may grade on a curve.

Hi Murphy and Kira,
We have a suggestion to.o It might take about 10 minutes but what My Vickie had to do with me, cause I have the tail and the excitment too is...She got a person and had them stand in front of me. I was standing at the time.

Each time they would reach down to pet me and I got excited, they would pull their hand back. (They didn't move their bodies, just raised their hand out of my reach and up to their side.) It took about four minutes before I settled down...(actually I got bored) and just waited for the pet.....It was worth it.

Then My Vickie put me on a "Sit" and we did the same thing. It took a bit of time but I actually realized if I wanted the pet and hug, I had to be still.

All this time, My Vickei was standing at my side and had her hand on my shoulder or neck as a reasurance.

Just an idea.

Good luck Murphy You'll do great.

And just so you know....I passed the test the first time, then My Vickie thought we should take the class again six months later and I had to take the test twice......I couldn't sit still.

Murphy, you have it made in the shade! I would have trouble with about half of those...

Funny, if I had to make a list about my dogs just like yours, it would be identical! All of them easy... except sitting still and politely for petting.

We joke that we think that we might have "over-socialized" our dogs!

Good luck on the test. I hope that the person doing the petting is as dour as possible.
