We headed down the coast for a quick camping trip. Not enough time or money for one of our epic multi week camping extravaganzas, so just a quick couple of nights at Ft. Stevens State Park.
We chewed sticks by a shipwreck.
(Well, Murphy chewed sticks).
The campground was almost completely packed but we lucked out and got a decent site. I'm reasonably confident we were the only people in our whole loop with "just" a tent. Everyone has giant RVs and motorhomes and palatial canopies. I must admit I find the idea of an RV pretty attractive. Or maybe a sleek airstream trailer. But then I think about how much it would cost to buy gas! Big difference from a 25+mpg Subaru.
Murphy would really have liked to visit an off leash beach, but we settled from this one that was walking distance from the campground instead. Plus a wet, sandy dog isn't really the most wonderful tent partner.
We attached ourselves to a tour some rangers were giving of Battery Russell. Murphy for the most part was a respectful tourist, we heard some cool stories, and we even got stickers at the end. Ft. Stevens was the only place in the continental US to be fired on during WWII. The Japanese submarine that fired those shots later returned with a dismantled float plane which was reassembled and dropped incendiary bombs over forests along the coast. Crazy stuff!

We got in a beach trip too! We hope to cram one more visit to the coast in Sept. That is a wonderful month to go.

Vacations with your dog = GREATEST!! Van and I are headed on one in a few weeks.
Okay, that first picture of you and Murphy is my FAVORITE!! You are gorgeous!! So is Murphy, obviously :) Girl, I wish you lived closer so we could hang out - and so Claire and Murphy could hang out also!
